Get involved
We are always excited to work with new students, researchers, and collaborators. Below are the ways people usually join the lab, and what to send if you would like to.
Ways to work with us
Undergraduate and master's students at CMU
We work with CMU undergraduates and master's students on thesis work, independent studies, research assistantships, and semester projects. We also host students during the summer through the HCII Summer Research Program and CMU's SURA and SURF programs.
Prospective Ph.D. students
Ph.D. students join through the Human-Computer Interaction Institute rather than through the lab, so applications go to the program and are reviewed once a year. Check the program page below for the current deadline. If you would like to work with the lab, name Prof. Patrick Carrington in your application. He is based in HCII and will consider co-advising students in other departments where the fit is right.
Visiting researchers
We host visiting researchers and interns. Alongside the list below, tell us when you could start and how long you are available.
What to send
If you are writing about any of the above, email Prof. Carrington at pcarrington@cmu.edu and include:
- Your CV, including your skills
- A link to your work. For group projects, say which parts were yours
- Your preferred start date, and how long you are available
If you are a researcher or designer interested in working together, write to Prof. Carrington directly.
HCI degree programs
If you are considering a graduate degree in HCI or an undergraduate major/minor, you can find out how to apply below.
Interested in spending your summer with us?
You might be interested in the HCII Summer Research Program. Applications typically open in late fall. CMU also runs summer research programs across the university, including SURA and SURF.
Our values
If you are working out whether this is the right lab for you, our values are the fairest picture we can give of how we work, what we pay attention to, and what we expect of each other.
